Spicy Turmeric Chai Latte
I've always been proud of my immune system, but since the arrival of Frankie, I seem to be picking up more bugs than usual. I've recently heard some amazing things about turmeric and it's healing properties so decided to give this recipe a whirl.
I was surprised at how tasy this is. Its very rich due to the oat milk and date syrup but if you prefer something lighter you could use almond milk and halve the date syrup.
I've never used fresh turmeric before and was surprised when my friend Harley told me they were selling it at the Goodlife, our local farm shop and cafe. It looks like a cross between ginger and jerusalem artichokes and the flesh is the same colour as sweet potato.
Frankie woke up just as i finished making this and was keen to try it. I was a bit worried about the cayenne content but that didn't seem to phase her at all and following that i didn't get much of a look in!
RECIPE: Makes one big or two small cups
INGREDIENTS
500ml dairy free milk
1 tablespoon date syrup
1 teaspoon fresh turmeric (finely grated), or ground
1 teaspoon fresh ginger (finely grated), or ground
1 cinnamon stick
¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
½ teaspoon real vanilla powder, plus extra for dusting
½ tablespoon coconut oil
¼ teaspoon black pepper, ground
pinch of cayenne pepper
METHOD
Put all ingredients in a pan and heat until boiling
Simmer for a few minutes
Strain, I use a nut milk bag but a fine sieve will do
Pour about ¼ of the drink into a jug and froth with a whisk or the frother on your coffee machine
Pour the drink into a mug, followed by your froth and top with a sprinkle of vanilla powder
TIPS
Frankie didn’t mind the cayenne but to make it child friendly just remove this ingredient
To make it less rich, use almond milk and halve the date syrup
Delicious served with Orange & Cinnamon Cookies (recipe here)
